Essential Urban Survival Skills

Disaster can strike at a time that no one expects them to be. Earthquakes and tornadoes could occur anytime and even storms or hurricanes can take an unprecedented turn and wreak havoc to those unprepared. Manmade disaster is also ever present and this is one of the highest risk that we are facing every day, from the time we wake up until we go to sleep. That’s why urban survival skills are essential for us to learn in order to be prepared for anything. There are numerous survival skills that can be learned, though knowing even a few of them can mean the difference between life and death, it is imperative that you learn some of these skills.

Staying Fit

Staying fit can be a great thing for any situation. By staying fit and healthy, you can be ready anytime a disaster strikes. This will allow you to traverse fields faster and easier, help trapped people, save yourself from obstacles and more. The ability to run, climb and continue forward can save your life.

Knowing your Environment

Take the time to know your area; knowing what kind of people lives there and what area, they live. Exploring the area is a great way to know where certain places are like an abandoned building, homes, stores, churches, hospitals and others. Also, be wary of gang territories and areas; avoid them as much as you can.

Moving Fast

You have the move fast to the exit as soon as you can to avoid clogged or crowded exits. In addition, if you know your environment, you can easily find alternate routes that are less likely clogged. Immediately seek for an exit once disaster happens, and when in doubt, you have to move, do not wait for others to agree.

Gear

Environmental hazards are likely present in the event of disasters. Radiation, toxic gas, broken glass and flying debris are great risks to you. Therefore, bringing a survival kit and gear with you all the time can make you prepared for this kind of hazards.

 

A few essentials:

High Lumen LED Flashlight

High Quality GPS Watch

Paracord and lots of it

A hunting or tactical knife

A first aid kit

Lots of water

Canned Food

 

Finding Shelter

The ability to find shelter as soon as you can is also a great factor for survivability. It could be days, weeks or even months before rescue comes to you and finding a shelter as soon as you can great secure your odds for survivability. Some of the possible shelters that you can find are the following:

  • Vacant Buildings (be aware of other already taking shelter, open elevator shafts, and disease from pigeon droppings, etc.)
  • Vacant Houses
  • Patches of Wooded Areas
  • Covered Alleyways
  • Dumpsters (quick shelter in a pinch, but be aware of dangers such as disposed hypodermic needles, broken glass, and bacteria)
  • Underside of stair wells

These survival skills can greatly help you in need. Using them and learning them can greatly increase your odds of surviving in times of need.
