If you are trying to survive from a disaster, you might find a nearby forest or wilderness area where you can take refugee. Getting there can be a great idea as you can find a lot of medicinal herbs, gather woods for shelter and for making fire, and most of all, food. Speaking of food, meat and calories are essential for your bodily functions and you can’t just eat plants or herbs all the time, especially if you think you’re going to stay there for a while. Therefore, catching animals or game is a precious skill to have.

Rifle can be an effective tool to catch animals, though it can be inefficient and the noise it makes could scare other animals or attract other people to your location. Good thing, a silent alternative is present and that is animal trapping. Now, let’s see some of the best trapping methods that we can use.

The first thing that we need to do is to understand your prey. There is no one-trap catchall solution, you have to understand your prey first before you create a trap. Different species have different traits and characteristics and you have to make sure that you know your area and understand your target in order to create the best trap. Some of the clues that you can use are the following:

  • Runs and trails
  • Tracks
  • Droppings
  • Chewed or rubbed vegetation
  • Nesting or roosting sites
  • Feeding and watering areas

If you’ve determined what kind of species are currently roaming in your area, you must have an effective bait for them. Here’s a comprehensive list:

  • Cat – Fish, meat, cat food.
  • Chipmunk – Peanut butter, popcorn, grains, sunflower seeds.
  • Dog – Dog food, meat, bones
  • Fox – Chicken entrails, prepared scented bait, mice.
  • Gopher – Peanut butter and bread.
  • Martin – Chicken entrails, fish, liver, vegetables, apples, crisp bacon
  • Mink – Chicken entrails, fish, liver, vegetables, apples, crisp bacon.
  • Muskrat – Apples, carrots, parsnips.
  • Porcupine – Apples, salt, carrots.
  • Rabbit – Fresh vegetables like Brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, lettuce, apples, bread.
  • Raccoon – Fish, sweet corn, crisp bacon, marshmallows.
  • Rat – Peanut butter, cheese, grain, sandwich meat.
  • Skunk – Entrails of chicken, fresh and canned fish.
  • Squirrel – Peanut butter, sunflower seeds, oatmeal, bread.
  • Weasels – Fish, fresh liver, chicken entrails.
  • Woodchuck – String beans, corn, lettuce, peas, apples.

The Most Basic Trapping Method

Baiting a trap or snare greatly increases your odds of catching an animal or game. If you’d like to try using a non-baited trap, a good positioning can marginally increase its success. However, combining bait with a well-placed trap or snare can marginally increase your chances of getting a game for your food supply.
